Creative Writing Clubs
in the Denver Area
All of the following creative writing clubs are ongoing throughout the year. Students who outgrow one club usually move up to a group containing older children, or take a break from the clubs to pursue other interests. There is no penalty for dropping out of the clubs, and families are given refunds if they paid in advance before deciding to leave. I do, however, ask that if you decide to drop out of the clubs, that you give me the courtesy of a phone call or letter to let me know. Please don't just stop showing up! I have students onwaiting lists who could be given your spot!
Three of the clubs meet at my home in Louisville, Colorado. Dragon Writers meets at a church in Louisville. (You'll need to register to get the details on location) I currently have six clubs ranging in age from 6 to 18 years old. The following is a list of the dates when those clubs will meet this season.
Remember, all clubs are either $30.00 or $50.00 a month (regardless of how many meetings you can attend) due on the first session of each month or by mail soon afterwards. There is a $10.00 discount for one child to attend two clubs. The fee covers club time, snacks, and limited editing services. It also contributes to my overhead expenses (including space rental fee, insurance, paid assistants, printing of newsletters, website and P.O. Box charges, and misc. costs). I'm sorry, I'm unable to offer sibling discounts at this time.
Dragon Writers
Dragon Writers meets every Wednesday at a church in Louisville, 3:45-5:15pm. This energetic club is for children ages 8-14. Dragon Writers includes a "Writing Center," where kids earn experience points in the role playing game for writing. Here they get assistance with grammar, spelling, and ideas. We also have a "Game Center," where kids are able to participate in an adventure role-playing game designed as a motivation to write. The game also teaches the students to slow down, to describe things in detail, to work on character development, and to create cohesive plots that flow as narratives. Prizes and snacks are also furnished. Cost is $50.00 per month. Click here to register
Dream Catchers
This club for girls only, ages 9-15, meets two Sundays a month, 1:00-2:30pm, at my home in Louisville. Dream Catchers focuses a lot on writing, sharing, critiquing, sisterly support, and role-playing. Cost is $30.00 per month. Click here to register
Generation X-Pression
Generation X-Pression ("Gen-X") is my most highly energetic club with gifted boys and girls mixed, ages 11-15. They write a great deal outside of the club and have been the heaviest contributors to the Druidawn project. Most of these young adultsdream of becoming professional writers as a result of Druidawn or another project they are working on. Many of them are highly talented writers and artists. Generation X-Pression meets two Sundays a month right after Dream Catchers, from 2:30-4:30 at my home in Louisville. Cost is $30.00 per month. Click here to register
Tenth Muse Society
The Tenth Muse Society is a private, uncensored club for high schoolers and early college level students only, ages 14-21. It is a club specifically designed for young professional writers and artists who are very serious about their craft. Due to the free expression of ideas, parental consent is required for membership. This group meets two Sundays a month at my home in Louisville, 3:30-6:00pm. Cost is $30.00 per month. Click here to register
Druidawn Writing Club at RMS
The Druidawn Writing Club at Rocky Mountain School for Gifted and Creative Children in Gunbarrel meets every Friday, 3:45-5:15pm. This club is run the same way that Dragon Writers is, and it's for the same age group. (see Dragon Writers above) Please contact the school directly for information about this club. 303-545-9230
Advanced Writing Workshop
The Advanced Writing Workshop is for serious writers, ages 12-21, who want to learn the techniques that professional writers use. There is no gaming in this group, though the curriculum includes fun writing activities that sharpen authoring skills. Work shared aloud in this group may be restricted in content, dependent upon the sensitivities of the members. The Advanced Writing Workshop meets at my home in Louisville every Tuesday, 4:00-5:30. Cost is $50.00 per month.
